Stability to profitability: managing interdependencies to meet a new environment

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the transformation of Italy-based Credit Itallano (Credit) from a government-owned financial institution to a private entity revealed the importance of management control systems (MCSs) in the management of both internal and external interdependencies. Credit's privatization, which involved not only a change into a different competitive environment but a redefinition of the financial market as well, also highlighted the vital role played by the bank's management in the successful transition. The decision's made by Credit's chief executive officer at that crucial junction in the bank's history illustrates the value of a manager in an institutionalized environment in providing the needed strategies in the implementation of MCSs.
