Stagecoach ruffles feathers

Article Abstract:

Stagecoach, a UK transport group, has sought to improve productivity and this has sometimes led to strikes. The company faced a dispute in London and Kent, England, in April 1996, the third such dispute over a few months The company is not likely to suffer great damage from any one dispute due to its size. Negative publicity, however, could be a problem. Stagecoach has won a franchise for South West Trains, where layoffs are planned. This could attract unwelcome attention from a regulator if the UK Labor Party wins the next election.

Article Abstract:

National Express will manage the railroad line for Gatwick, England, and is likely to receive approval to acquire Midland Mainline, which operates trains between the Midlands, England, and London. The company is likely to see a rise in profit from these rail deals, according to analysts. National Express has acquired two airports since it was floated in 1992, and the airports division is performing well. The company began as a bus line, and that business is also seeing a rise in operating profit.

National Express

Article Abstract:

National Express is a UK operator of buses and airports. The company began operating coaches, and moved into buses with the acquisition of West Midlands Travel (WMT) in 1995. Coaches tend to be seasonal so WMT should provide some stability. The Polski Express network in Poland has suffered from low fares and elevated costs, but National Express' European network is generally performing well. The company's profit is forecast at 41 million pounds sterling by Smith New Court.
