Standard Chartered

Article Abstract:

Standard Chartered has long-term links with the Far East, and was hit by the Asian financial crisis which has led to a rise in non-performing loans. The company reported an increase in provisions for 1st half 1999 of 27%, with Chinese loans figuring prominently. Provisions could increase by an additional 216 million pounds sterling in 2nd half 1999. The bank has performed better in the Middle East, India and Africa, and is able to prepare for the Asian recovery by expanding in that region.
