Stocks in trade

Article Abstract:

The state of the stock market is likely to influence venture capitalists since they plan to sell their investments after some two to three years. United Kingdom banks are keen to provide debt for buy-outs and institutional investors are also interested in buy-outs. There is concern that too much liquidity could have a negative influence though this may not affect prices unduly. Interest rate rises could have an adverse effect on buy-outs if they affect demand and profitability.

Development capital: a tricky business to get right

Article Abstract:

Development capital is not easy to define so it is difficult to obtain statistics on this market. Development capital can be estimated at 154 million pounds sterling for 1995 compared with 128 million pounds for the previous year, according to the British Venture Capital Association. Development capital transactions tend to involve entrepreneurs seeking to bring about major changes in companies they manage, and they may not be enthusiastic about losing equity.

Europe catches up - slowly

Article Abstract:

The European venture capital market saw a record year in terms of funds raised in 1994. UK participants predominate and buyouts are becoming increasingly popular. There are many small firms in Germany and France which face problems related to succession and ownership. Italy and Spain are also markets with potential opportunities. Eastern Europe is seen as too underdeveloped with legal uncertainties and problems of obtaining information.
