"Supermarkets are not retail's future"

Article Abstract:

Supermarkets might not form part of the retail equation in the future as local convenience stores and home shopping will provide sufficient range of products and quality in fresh food, according to John Rowe, Sainsbury's logistics director, who believes that local stores will become increasingly popular. Sainsbury's has plans to open two more Localstores in Headcorn, Kent and Hartley Witney, Hampshire in September and December 1998, following an encouraging sales performance from its first Localstore in Fulham Palace Road, London. This downsizing operation presents Sainsbury's with a real challenge and in order to make it successful, the range of products will have to vary in individual locations, rather than in supermarkets where the range of products is often the same in different stores. Convenience stores would present even more of an opportunity for the multiples if typical distribution costs of around 7% could be reduced to the 3% level found in supermarket operations.

Sainsbury's offers UK organic berries

Article Abstract:

UK based supermarket, Sainsbury, has announced that it is to begin selling British grown organic strawberries. The company already sells Spanish grown organic strawberries at its stores but believes that the British variety will be more popular due to their local origin. Sainsbury has entered into a five year long deal with Kentish Garden, the fruit growing co-operative, for the supply of some 2.5 tonnes of strawberries. Sainsbury is to sell the fruit in 250g punnets that will have a retail price of GB 1.89, which is slightly more expensive than the price for non organic strawberries at GB 1.39 for the same size pack. Sainsbury is launching the organic fruit in response to consumer concerns about the increase in genetically modified foods. *
