Companies such as IBM and AT and T are positioning themselves as major competitors in the information technology services market which is currently dominated by Electronic Data Systems Corp., Andersen Consulting and Unisys Corp. The new entrants in the IT services market are developing new marketing strategies to increase their share of the market by banking on their credibility as high-quality hardware manufacturers. The established leaders in the market, meanwhile, are consolidating their market shares with similar marketing strategies.

Electronic Data Systems Inc. (EDS) will soon regain its independence after 11 years of being part of the giant automobile maker General Motors Corp. The spinoff of the firm is expected to be finalized in 1996. In preparation for its new life as an autonomous organization, EDS is poised to embark on a marketing campaign that is intended to build the firm's image and identity among a greater number of targeted consumers.
