Surprise: Cable Produces Some Bright Spots

Article Abstract:

Cable television did not have a very good year in 1983. Several facets of cable television folded because of poor viewership. Two areas where cable television showed some successes were the business news and regional sports networks. The financial networks, Business Times and the Financial News Network, may be the first two cable services to make a profit based solely on ad revenues. Though cable networks still have a long way to go to get support from both advertisers and viewers, they have gained a degree of acceptability in the last five years.
