Taking an international perspective

Article Abstract:

Jersey fund managers tend to take an international perspective and do not weight portfolios with UK shares as heavily as do fund managers in the UK. Risks can be spread more widely with this approach. Fund managers tend to have a wide knowledge of global markets in line with the needs of the international clientele. Some fund managers have their base in Jersey, but few are employed by a company owned in the Channel Islands. Ashburton is an established fund manager in the Channel Isles.

Ease yourself gently into the stock market

Article Abstract:

Unit trusts allow investors to gain exposure to a range of markets and spread their risks. They also have their fund managed. Private client stockbrokers will manage funds but they tend to demand a large minimum investment. Unit trusts have a range of uses such as paying for school fees. They can also be used to pay off mortgage debts through personal equity plans (Peps). Pep backed mortgages have gradually become accepted by the public and could account for 10% of the market.

Continental shift

Article Abstract:

Funds investing in mainland Europe may perform well, since the US and United Kingdom have already shown a good performance, so mainland Europe may follow. It is not clear, however, whether European funds are nearing a peak. There are also arguments that structural changes in Europe could bring growth that lasts longer than a business cycle. European monetary union (Emu) is a key factor for European markets, and the success of Emu will affect funds invested in Europe.
