When Your Only Customer Is the Federal Government

Article Abstract:

The McDonnell Douglas Corporation was awarded the government contract for F-15 Eagle planes (F-15E). The government has not yet told the company to build the planes, though research and development costs have totaled in the millions. The only market for the F-15E is the United States government. McDonnell must now begin marketing to the decision makers, Congressional leaders, to get the go ahead. Under government regulations, advertising costs must be paid for from McDonnell's earnings. Print was the advertising medium in national newspapers and newsweeklies.
