Telecoms regulation: Don gets tough

Article Abstract:

Don Cruickshank is head of the UK Office of Telecommunications (Oftel) and is concerned over portrayals of his efforts as regulator of the industry in personal terms. A new price review has been released and has been followed by a drop in the share price of British Telecommunications (BT) of 10%. BT is concerned that Oftel may act as arbiter defining anti-competitive behavior. UK telecoms customers are well served by regulation, but investors have not been rewarded in the same way.

Telecoms: trying times for BT

Article Abstract:

British Telecom (BT) holds a 90% stake in the UK telecoms market and faces competition from AT and T which aims to set up a service throughout the UK. BT has also been told by Oftel, the industry regulator, to cease subsidies of products such as handsets from telecoms network profits. This follows complaints from competing manufacturers of telecoms equipment. AT and T will start with business users and is likely to then expand into domestic services.

BT and C and W held talks on 33 billion pounds sterling link-up

Article Abstract:

British Telecommunications (BT) and Cable and Wireless (C and W) have discussed a merger, but talks have not been fruitful. The price appears to be the main obstacle, rather than the idea of a link between the two companies. C and W holds 57.5% stake of Hong Kong Telecom, which is seen as attractive for BT. Other telecoms companies could be interested in an agreement and thus pose a potential competitive threat to BT if no deal is agreed.
