Tesco joins the food fast track

Article Abstract:

The UK retailer Tesco, has announced the possibility of an alliance with Virgin Trains and Virgin Atlantic. The retailer will provide its own-brand food to travellers on the trains and flights. This could include both hot and cold food based on a similar concept to the in-store restaurant on Virgin Trains. Talks are at an early stage at present but if it goes ahead the deal has the potential to be huge. The more upmarket food from Tesco could be used for those travelling on Virgin Atlantic planes and the premium-finest range could be an option for Business Class customers.

Tesco, the will add 50 new products to its Finest range in September 1998, claiming that its upmarket convenience food range has taken some of UK Marks & Spencer's market share in this niche sector. Twenty new lines were introduced in June 1998 including more vegetable accompaniment dishes.
