Stuck in the middle again

Article Abstract:

The advent of the Internet was hailed by most manufacturing industries as a powerful marketing tool, as well as the cost-efficient answer to their distribution problems. However, in the sound recording industry, this technology created an avalanche of unauthorized reproductions of their products. The piracy developed to such an extent that sound recordings by famous bands and artists may be heard on the Internet months before they are made available at retail stores. The Recording Industry Association of America has filed and won lawsuits regarding this issue.

A new area of liability

Article Abstract:

Suggested modifications to the Ontario Securities Acts would create a statutory liability that would deal with the issuance of prospectuses where misleading or false information can affect share prices in the market. The proposed new legislation assumes that the investing public depends on financial statements in deciding where to invest their money. The proposed civil right of action can be used in 2 cases, namely, when there is failure of disclosure on any changes or when there is misrepresentation in documents and other public statements.
