The European contribution to a global civil navigation satellite system

Article Abstract:

The European Union has become a partner in the Global Civil Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) as part of its plan to construct the Trans-European Network. The European regional segment of the GNSS, the European Navigation Satellite System (ENSS) plans to provide a self-standing infrastructure for civil navigation in Europe that is compatible with the present satellite systems of Europe and America. ENSS will provide a global service to civilians of Europe and become an integrated part of the future GNSS2. The financial and organizational aspects of ENSS are discussed.

Laser satellite communications: current status and directions

Article Abstract:

Governments and businesses in developed countries have been reluctant to commit themselves to bringing laser satellite communications systems into full operational use, even though they have invested extensively in developing this technology. In many applications, laser satellite communications systems will only be widely adopted if they can be shown to offer a significant advantage over microwave solutions. Microwave systems offer mature technology, but laser satellite communications systems offer lower power consumption and occupy much less volume.

Satellite vulnerability: a post-Cold War issue?

Article Abstract:

Mitigation of secrecy involved in the operations of US reconnaissance satellites and frequent innovations to these systems are essential to ensure national and international safety. These initiatives are especially needed in the post-cold war era, wherein nations are equipping themselves with advanced space-based systems, including rudimentary antisatellite weapons, which could be used for aggressive purposes by hostile nations such as Iraq.
