The Impact of Teller Turnover in Banking: First Appearances Are Deceiving

Article Abstract:

Since the beginning of management studies, employee turnover has been regarded as a costly dysfunction that healthy businesses should try to reduce or eliminate. No one has ever suggested that this phenomenon may have a healthy and beneficial side as well. An analysis of employee turnover in the banking industry was undertaken with the intent of discovering possible advantages of the turnover rate. Results show that employee turnover is not a universally negative phenomenon for the organization, that a certain amount of turnover is unavoidable, and that an attempt to stop it entails useless expense. Newly hired employees are less costly to maintain than are senior employees. If turnover occurs before an employee is vested, the company is spared the cost of maintaining that employee in a pension retirement plan. Therefore, any analysis of employee turnover needs to take into account the positive as well as the negative effects upon the organization. Charts and tables are included.
