The application of cluster analysis in strategic management research: an analysis and critique

Article Abstract:

The statistical technique of cluster analysis as a decision-making tool in management has been in use for some time. The technique was examined by analyzing 45 published strategic management research studies in which cluster analysis was employed since the late 1970s. Results indicate that that the system is flawed to a certain extent, such as in the effectiveness of its coding system. The coding system is responsible for placing variables in the cluster, determining cluster number and size, as well as the basis in manipulating the decision-making algorithm. Cluster analysis needs to be validated by other forms of statistical analysis which can support the projections that can be gleamed from the results.

Research notes and commentaries: an assessment of the use of structural equation modeling in strategic management research

Article Abstract:

The use of structural equation modeling (SEM) in 92 strategic management studies published in nine prominent journals from 1984 to 2002 is compared with the guidelines culled from methodological research. It is found that the use and reporting of SEM is often less than ideal.
