The best of neighbours?

Article Abstract:

State government's efforts to market Canada to foreign investors as the cheaper and safer alternative to the US have yet to succeed. Foreign direct investment statistics show that Canada's share of overall North American investment significantly fell from 1985's 24% to 1998's 16%. Despite the country's productive workforce and sophisticated infrastructure, majority of international investors prefer to take their businesses in the US. It is believed that Canada's disadvantages arise from its geography, having scattered markets along the southern border and a small population of about 30 million. This is further aggravated by the country's tax system that burdens non-manufacturing industries, which are considered the world's fastest growing sector.

School for scandal

Article Abstract:

YBM Magnex International, a Pennsylvania-based manufacturer of industrial magnets, saw its stock rise on the Toronto Stock Exchange from less than six Canadian dollars a share in early 1996 to more than 20 Canadian dollars by March 1998, receiving a listing on the blue-chip Toronto 300 index. However its US headquarters were raided by the FBI in May 1998 and it went into receiverships six months later, after the new management concluded it would soon be indicted on charges of money-laundering. The event received global attention and the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) aims to improve enforcement and hopes to show the world that Canada is safe place to invest.
