The blue-chip insurer leaps into the unknown

Article Abstract:

Norwich Union plans a flotation in Jun 1997 and there is a possibility that AMP could be interested in acquiring the company once the stocks are available. It is unclear whether new stockholders would sell to AMP. The group chief executive of Norwich Union is Allan Bridgewater, and Richard Harvey is to succeed him in Dec 1997. The company has a sales force of 160 staff and new sales of pensions and life policies rose in 1996 following a fall in 1995. Usage of independent advisers for many sales means that the company has less legal liability for pensions mis-selling, though the brand name could be affected.
