The interests of private investors sometimes appear to be ignored when changes occur on the United Kingdom stock market. Nominee accounts have been promoted as the result of a new electronic stock settlement system called Crest and stockholders lose some benefits of direct ownership of stocks if they use nominee accounts. Private investors do not have to be included in Stock Exchange flotations. They may also suffer handicaps with the new trading structure to be implemented from Oct 1997 which excludes deals of under 4,000 pounds sterling.

EASDAQ was set up by European securities dealers, investment bankers and venture capitalists with the goal of floating fast growing and innovative European firms on a wide market. The focus was on telecoms, engineering, biotechnology and other high-growth areas. A pan-European dealing system has developed which takes NASDAQ as its model. There are 69 members such as stockbrokers and banks, and 37 listings. EASDAQ aims to increase numbers of both listings and members.

Germany Neuer Markt stock exchange is working to repair the damage done to its reputation by several scandals and claims of weak regulations. Despite problems, Neuer Markt is still the most liquid of the European new markets.
