The corporate governance of banks: alternative solutions for coherent structures and control

Article Abstract:

A study of alternative governance systems for banks reveals that the 'prudential shareholder' solution may provide for optimal bank governance by allowing for continuous monitoring without stifling activities. Another solution is integral to most European banks and this involves requiring public ownership of the piece of the banking system. Other systems exist that may be of use but these systems should also take into account regulation and monetary policies.

Corporate governance of banks: Germany

Article Abstract:

A survey of corporate governance in German banks reveals that these banks have widely dispersed share ownerships and that differences in performance arise from this factor. Differences in representation may be what makes private bankers generate higher returns than their counterparts while differences in ownership structure and control may be the reason for private savings' and cooperative banks' better performance.
