The cost of being misinformed

Article Abstract:

Existing accounting methods which are used to determine the amount of risk and evaluate credit criteria are fast becoming obsolete when used in assessing the financial standing of high technology firms. A misjudgement on the part of a banking institution, which prohibited a knowledge-based firm from extending its credit line due to the bank's failure to account for business value, is a case in point. Such decisions, which can deter the growth of industry and significantly affect the economic in general, must be revised with new methods which address the needs of a changing business environment.

Free trade free-for-all

Article Abstract:

The US-Canada Free Trade Agreement is essential for both countries despite what critics say. The agreement consists of a tariff reduction schedule and a dispute settlement mechanism. It also includes a national treatment clause that prohibits corporate discrimination between the two countries. Critics say that the agreement is detrimental to Canadian businesses, but defenders argue that the losses now being experienced by Canadian industries are not due to the Free Trade Agreement but to the value Canadian dollar.

Health-care hang-ups

Article Abstract:

The health-care system of Canada is seriously flawed. For one, it is highly bureaucratic in nature. Moreover, budgets are not connected to the services provided which makes it virtually impossible to make cost-effective decisions. The design of hospital financial information systems makes it easy to control input but not output. Further exacerbating matters, doctors are offered inappropriate financial incentives. As a solution, Canada may consider emulating the health maintenance organizations of the US.
