The distribution of product innovations in the food industry: economic determinants and empirical tests for Germany

Article Abstract:

Analysis of product innovations within the German food industry reveals market structure to have a significant effect on market performance. Strong demand for product variety by consumers is an incentive for firms to formulate new products. The absence of innovations may cause firms to forfeit their market share. However, the Neo-Schumpeter hypothesis, which states that conditions in monopolistic markets are more conducive for innovation, does not hold true for the German food industry.
