Article Abstract:

David Maister's new book 'True Professionalism - How Dedication to Excellence will Assure your Success' offers valuable tips on how a professional firm can be managed more effectively. With its author coming from the accountancy profession, the book is particularly helpful to accounting firms. Maister's approach is simple. He proposes objectives and intentions that any manager would have to agree with, enumerates the measures to be taken to achieve the desired outcomes, and then asks if managers have implemented these measures. He also addresses the sense of helplessness experienced by some employees of professional firms. Maister proposes that malaise can be defeated when employees learn how to love and enjoy their work, and when companies provide their employees with some time to relax and feel in control of themselves.

Playing it too safe

Article Abstract:

In large organizations where risk is a major factor and chief risk officers are appointed to manage risk, there is a danger that these companies will become so self-important that they believe they are setting the standards when they are, in fact, getting bogged down in their own behaviour and are becoming more risk averse. Some companies are becoming so risk-averse that they are no longer able to achieve their original objectives.
