The new South Africa

Article Abstract:

South Africa is attracting foreign capital and exchange controls are being dismantled. There is political stability but there is also concern as to what will occur after Nelson Mandela goes. US companies are returning to South Africa, and investment banks are setting up in the country. Tourism is growing bringing a rise in demand for hotel space. Water supplies have to be extended to cover the whole population regardless of color. Crime and lack of respect for the law are still problems.

South Africa emerges onto the world stage

Article Abstract:

South Africa is an emerging market which is in the recovery stage of its economic cycle. Economic growth of 3.1% is forecast for 1995, rising to 3.2% in 1996, according to James Capel. Inflation is rising, and balance of payments problems could increase, though capital goods account for a large proportion of imports. Interest rates may rise, and regional elections in Nov 1995 are making investors cautious. South Africa offers both potential rewards and risks to investors.

Foreign investment

Article Abstract:

Foreign investment has risen in South Africa, though not by as much as hoped. Potential investors are concerned about high crime levels, and other investment targets in Asia offer higher levels of economic growth. Large companies which have invested in South Africa include Ford Motor and Nissan Diesel. The size of some South African companies means that they are dominant in many fields, and this does not allow much space for foreign competition.
