The new school

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom individual savings accounts (Isas) offer tax planning opportunities for investors, though there is also some confusion about how they work. There is a range of choices available, as well as different Cat standards applied to investments. The Isa is a tax free wrapper rather than an invetsment in itself, and the wrapper can be used for cash, life insurance, and stocks and shares. Cash Isas may appear attractive due to their simplicity, but equities have tended to perform better than cash over the longer term.

More than a matter of interest

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom tax-exempt special savings accounts (Tessas) tend to provide better interest rates than conventional savings accounts at building societies. They have most attractions for tax payers liable for the higher rate of tax, but they can also offer benefits for non-taxpayers since they tend to have high interest rates. Investors can choose fixed or variable rate Tessas, and which one they opt for depends partly on the direction that investors expect interest rates to take.

Isa tonic?

Article Abstract:

Individual savings accounts (Isas) are new United Kingdom savings vehicles with tax benefits. Providers will offer new Isa products from April 1998 and the government aims to attract low-income savers. Isas offer flexibility and can include stocks, cash and insurance, and have an inital 7,000 pounds sterling limit, dropping to 5,000 pounds for the second year. Isas could cost more to run than previous products with tax benefits and customers may face higher management charges.
