The problem with pay

Article Abstract:

One of the major problems with compensation management in the UK is that it involves highly complicated appraisal systems that are managed by bloated human resources departments. Experience has proven that appraisal programs, no matter how sophisticated, are doomed from the start because their emphasis is on the individual employee rather than on teams which actually produce products and services. In team-based organizations, assessing an employee's pay level in isolation is always a mistake. Another mistake is leaving appraisal systems entirely in the hands of HR professionals. Without the input of strategic planners, appraisal programs will remain a purely internal operation rather than as part of the company's overall business strategy. Compensation should start being based on performance and market forces.
