Article Abstract:

Activity in the Japanese bond market has been spurred by low Japanese interest rates and the elimination of minimum bond rating requirements to issue unsecured bonds on Jan 1, 1996. The recision of the bond rating requirement allowed issuers rated BB or less to access the Samurai bond market. In the first 10 months of 1996, volume on the Samurai bond market totalled 757 billion yen for 40 issues; the market had only 37 issues for al of 1994 and 1995.

Yankee bonds

Article Abstract:

The volume of Asian investment-grade fixed-income issues on the US bond market, known as the Yankee bond market to Asian issuers, accounted for 42% of the total volume on the Yankee bond market. In the 12 months ending in Jun 1997, Asian investment-grade Yankee bond issues totalled $23.5 billion. HSBC Markets forecasts that the annual volume of the Asian Yankee bond will reach $80 billion by the end of the century.

Manufacturing to underpin a new phase

Article Abstract:

Sabah, Malaysia's Chief Minister Yong Teck is overseeing the restructuring of the region's economy to promote the manufacturing industry in order to boost economic prosperity. Commodity production still dominates Sabah's economy, thus making economic growth rates erratic. Yong Teck predicts that Sabah's economic growth will be between 7% and 8% in 1997, up from 4.2% in 1996.
