The seeking of strategy where it is not: towards a theory of strategy absence: a reply to Bauerschmidt

Article Abstract:

Bauerschmidt critiqued a paper that was published by Strategic Management Journal which discussed the absence of strategy. The paper contended that such absence of strategy should be accepted as a legitimate concept. However, Bauerschmidt argued that the paper did not really introduce a new strategy paradigm and challenged the arguments as nothing but rhetorical ploy. This is unfortunate because he misinterpreted the intended message of the piece. The installation of a new paradigm was not the purpose of the paper, despite the fact that it did question the accepted notion that every firm must possess an articulated strategy. The main point of the paper was that the idea of absence may contribute to strategy researchers's understanding of paradigms that exist.

Experience effects and collaborative returns in R&D alliances

Article Abstract:

The link between prior alliance experience and firm benefits from R&D collaborations is studied to explore whether firms learn to mange their alliances. The positive benefits of prior experience in complex alliances suggest that a broader set of alliance management processes allows the firm to manage situations of ambiguity more readily.
