The telemedicine frontier: going the extra mile

Article Abstract:

Telemedicine has many potential applications beyond the settings where it is already becoming established, such as clinics, hospitals and long-term care facilities. Indeed, it could make an extremely significant contribution to medical care in the 21st century. At present, telemedicine is mainly used in developed countries, but it is now being accepted as having a key role to play in developing countries, where communications links are often very poor. It will also be an important element in the medical care of space crew.

Will fiber optics threaten satellite communications?

Article Abstract:

Some sectors believe that the entry of fiber optic technology poses a major threat to satellite communications since it offers the same service quality at lower costs. Given the continually growing demand for communications services, however, it is more plausible to predict that both modes of communication can work symbiotically. Satellite communications can provide services to geographically separated areas while fiber optic communications can help fill the gaps in the former's communications network.

Disaster assessment and satellite communication: on the threshold of a new era

Article Abstract:

Emerging satellite communications technologies can be used to improve disaster management by enhancing on-site disaster assessments. Satellites are independent from local communications infrastructures which may be nonexistent or may have been damaged as a result of a disaster. Two kinds of satellite systems are the voice-based satellite communications system such as the Iridium and data-oriented satellite communications systems such as the planned Motorola Celestri system.
