Credit reference agencies have more than 40 million files with information on UK consumers. These agencies have to provide copies of their files to the people concerned on request after a fee has been paid. Information on other members of the same household may affect credit ratings, though bad debts of a previous occupant of an address should not be taken into account. Consumers can ask for a notice of disassociation if their file mentions a family member's debts. This notice states that they have nothing to do with the financial affairs of the family member.
