The undoing of Nielsen

Article Abstract:

Changes in the television industry and technological innovations in audience measurement have combined to erode the premier position of A.C. Nielsen Co and its Nielsen Television Index. Nielsen faces competition from newer companies such as Britain's AGB Television Research, and from new tools like the 'people meter,' which more accurately measures audience viewing habits than the 'black box' devices and household diaries. Network analysts are concerned because the updated measurements indicate smaller audiences than previously estimated. Independent television stations, cable television, remote control devices, home entertainment centers, and videocassette recorders challenge traditional forms of television broadcasting. Future audiences may be measured by heat sensors, sonar devices, or electronic scanning of purchased goods.

What's happened to ABC since it's become Murph's turf?

Article Abstract:

Since Capital Cities Communications took over ABC in January 1986, the new chairman, Thomas Sawyer Murphy, has announced that ABC will not record profits for either 1986 or 1987. ABC's difficulties are indicative of industry reversals, such as the 20 percent decline in the size of the national viewing audience enjoyed by the three major networks (occasioned by new cable television networks and aggressive independent stations) and the accompanying decline in advertising revenues. ABC is considering down-sizing and reorganization strategies in order to turn a profit in future years. Economic situations and corporate planning strategies at the two other major networks are also briefly described. Murphy's professional and personal life is described.

Deals of fortune

Article Abstract:

The National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) is focusing an education-oriented panel discussion on block buying, a station's legal but unethical use of tie-in demands, and block booking, the illegal tying of two distinctly separate products together. This controversial topic is not often discussed because of blackball fears, and while block booking is an illegal restraint of trade (violating the Sherman Antitrust Act), block booking and group deals are legal. The Outlet Communications suit against King World is discussed, and the minor effect of the United States v. Loews Inc. on the industry is examined.
