The value of a name

Article Abstract:

Vickers plans to sell Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and claims that Rolls-Royce plc does not have the right to influence who buys Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. An agreement made in 1973 allowing Rolls-Royce to influence a sale cannot be enforced, Vickers argues, due to European competition law. Rolls-Royce apparently favors BMW to buy Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, and Vickers is concerned that other buyers could be deterred, which could reduce the price that Vickers could obtain from the sale of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

Car profits hit a bump

Article Abstract:

General Motors is among major automobile manufacturers facing problems and has announced that earnings for 1996 will be lower than analysts' expectations. Renault's chairman, Louis Schweitzer, has forecast a loss for 1996 and does not expect a great deal of improvment for 1997. Volkswagen, however, forecasts a rise in earnings, with Audi making a strong contribution. General Motors forecasts improvements in 1997 despite spending more on incentives for buyers and facing higher launch costs.

Car manufacturers: recovery slows down

Article Abstract:

The European car industry began to recover in early 1996, but registrations for Jun 1996 dropped by almost 9% compared to Jun 1995. The drop in France was 32% and Spain saw a drop of 21% for new car registrations. The French government had provided incentives to boost car sales which distorted comparisons. Consumer demand is also weak in France. Germany presents a healthier market with a rise in sales in 1st half 1996 of 6.4% compared with the same period in 1995.
