The year 2000: a food industry forecast

Article Abstract:

A modified Delphi method is used to forecast future trends and developments in the food industry. Four major areas in the food system are specifically analyzed. These are supermarket sales distribution, technological developments, operational developments and structural developments. The study indicates a continued strong demand for fresh and branded foods. Technology is also seen to significantly affect the future of the food industry, specially in customer service.

Supermarkets and their impacts on the agrifood system of Brazil: The competition among retailers

Article Abstract:

An explanation is given for evidence that challenges the knowledge that predicted the disappearance of medium and small retail stores with the advance of large supermarket chains in the Brazilian food market. However, the evolution of the food retail structure shows growth in the number of traditional retailers and independent supermarkets, with an increase in food sales, except for the Metropolitan Area of Sao Paulo.

Managing food industry business and financial risks with commodity-linked credit instruments

Fluctuating commodity prices can seriously affect the agriculture and food business and unmanaged business risks can lead to higher costs of capital and volatile share prices. A properly formulated risk management strategy is vital to the success of the industry and the usefulness of commodity-linked credit instruments in such risk management is evaluated.
