Profits on track for the runaway trains

Article Abstract:

British Rail has been privatized in a complex operation which as involved separating different elements such as tracks, freight services and stations. There has been controversy over the privatization which is likely to increase especially as the privatization appears to have involved too low a price for the railroad. Shareholders of companies acquiring part of British Rail have benefited greatly. The railroad was broken up to promote competition but consolidation has begun and is likely to continue.

All eyes on rail signals

Article Abstract:

Stagecoach is seeking permission to acquire Porterbrook, which leases trains and coaches to companies that operate them. Stagecoach already operates trains so this would involve consolidation of UK railroads. The government has separated the different activities involved in the rail system, so the acquisition would undo its work. Some analysts see consolidation as necessary to achieve economies of scale, but a government run by the Labor party could seek to curb takeovers in the industry.
