Tobacco litigation: Imperial's good start

Article Abstract:

Imperial Tobacco faces a legal threat from a law firm in London, England, which is representing 40 smokers and only charging fees if they win. The company's share price has not been affected. Imperial Tobacco has been separated from Hanson, and Imperial's share price rose by 5% in the first day the shares were traded. The case will probably not be heard before 1998 and the decision of the judge will set a precedent affecting other legal claims against the tobacco industry.

Cough up

Article Abstract:

BAT's financial services operations could be affected by legal claims against its tobacco division. Brown and Williamson, the group's US tobacco subsidiary, is subject of action by health authorities. BAT may be planning to demerge financial services in order to prevent their being affected by tobacco-related claims. BAT's entire profit from tobacco could be affected by claims, in addition to further sums. The group argues that its financial services division is not vulnerable.
