Tough at the top

Article Abstract:

Dame Sheila Masters has been elected to head the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1999 and 2000. Trained in both law and accountancy, Masters brings to her new position her formidable reputation as one of the UK's leading experts in public-sector finance. During her long association with KPMG, Masters has been involved with the privatization of the railways, the reorganization of the Post Office and the restructuring of the nuclear industry. She also counts the BBC as one of her more important clients. It is a measure of Masters's sterling reputation that she has been asked to serve as a non-executive director of the Bank of England. She also serves as a commissioner of the Public Works Loan Board, as a non-executive member of the Inland Revenue's Management Board and as a member of the chancellor of the exchequer's Private Finance Panel.
