UK: CHAMPAGNE SALES INCREASING

Producers of champagne are being asked not to raise prices as champagne sales in the UK are currently seen to be booming. During the last two months of 1999, champagne sales increased 73% at its wine warehouses, according to Majestic Wine. Retailers are keen to maintain the interest in champagne in the UK, and hope that the bubble will not be burst by any increase in champagne prices.

UK: SEASONAL CHAMPAGNE PROMOTION BY SAFEWAY

Article Abstract:

A champagne and sparkling wine promotion is running in all Safeway stores until the end of November, in an attempt to encourage early Christmas and millennium purchases. As all major retailers prepare for the seasonal rush, Safeway is confident of that supplies will meet increased demand. Like Sainsbury's the retailer is offering a 20% discount on purchases of six champagnes or sparkling wines, and further price cuts include GB[pound] 3 off the Safeway Albert Etienne Brut magnum, now costing GB[pound] 23.95, and a GB[pound] 2 reduction on the standard 750ml bottle, to GB[pound] 11.99. The Piper Heidsieck magnum is reduced by GB[pound] 3.50 to GB[pound] 33.95, with a GB[pound] 4 multibuy saving on two standard purchases. Sparkling wine reductions include GB[pound] 1 off Australian Nottage Hill Sparkling Chardonnay, at GB[pound] 5.99, while the store's own label Spanish cava is being promoted at GB[pound] 3.99

UK: BRANDED WINE AND SPECIALTY DRINKS FOR XMAS

Article Abstract:

Branded wine and specialty drinks are to prove popular in the Christmas period according to AC Nielsen. November and December sales of branded wine will be up more than 41% and specialty drinks up 25%. Champagne sales are already booming and demand has increased 60% of the past seven weeks putting a strain on supply.
