UK: ASDA BOSS REVEALS FUTURE PLANS

Attaining synergies between Asda and Wal-Mart Germany will be the main aim of Wal-Mart Europe chief, Allan Leighton. Mr Leighton, who is also chief executive of UK-based supermarket group, Asda, plans to examine the sectors where the two businesses could combine resources, it emerged in January 2000.

UK: SUPPORT FOR SAFEWAY SCHEME

Article Abstract:

Safeway has revealed that its Availability Focus Scheme has so far proved successful. The company asked some 300 suppliers of its top 1,000 selling products to pay a voluntary GB[pound] 20,000 per product line to the supermarket in return for ensuring 100% availability of the product. It is said that so far 100 of these 300 suppliers have agreed to join the scheme and only a handful have refused to take part. It is said that numerous other suppliers are negotiating individual deals with the company.
