UK: SOMERFIELD TO DECIDE IN FEBRUARY?

Article Abstract:

Whilst Somerfield may still decide by the end of January 2000 on who will purchase its 140 Somerfield and 250 Kwik Save outlets, company sources say this decision may now not be made until the middle of February 2000. They speculate that management would probably prefer the sale to occur in the new financial year. Shareholders have three weeks to make a decision, having been posted details of the final bids.

UK: BUDGENS JOINS BARTERCARD NETWORK

Article Abstract:

UK convenience store chain, Budgens, is the first and, at present, only supermarket to join the Bartercard UK network. The scheme works on a barter system between the 1,000 participants. If one member buys goods from another, Bartercard debits the buyer's account in 'trading pounds' and credits the seller's account. Members of the scheme are thought to be more likely to trade with one another because of the discounting aspect of the card. Bartercard currently operates in nine countries and clears over GB[pound] 20mn of bartered business a year.
