UK: SMALLER SUPERMARKET SALES DOING WELL

Booths Supermarkets, the Preston based 24-store chain, saw sales jump by 15% for the three weeks ending January 1st. The sales improvement was attributed to improvements in supply chain systems and use of new technology, which has made them more efficient. Morrisons had a record breaking Christmas with sales up 15% in the Christmas period. Waitrose food sales also notched up a new high but Waitrose and Morrison both expect further market share increases.

UK: ASDA TO ENTER ELECTRICAL RETAILING

Article Abstract:

Asda has announced that it is planning to introduce a permanent electrical retailing fixture to its stores across the UK. The company has reached a GB[pound] 60mn agreement with Schneider, the German television and hi-fi manufacturer, to supply low-priced electrical items for the next 12 months. Asda has trailed an electrical fixture at its store in Benton, Newcastle and is now planning to extend it to a further 10 large stores over the next year. The range is expected to include hi-fis, televisions, videos and digital video discs (DVDs).
