UK: ASDA RUMOURED TO BE OPENING NON-FOOD STORE

Article Abstract:

Asda is rumoured to be planning to open a non-food hypermarket in competition with Kingfisher's Big W chain. The supermarket chain is thought to have asked consultancy Smyth Associates to look for 70,000 square feet sites and that it had already made offers on two Midlands sites. However, Asda denies the rumours and maintains that its only planned formats in 2000 were Asda Fresh and Supercentres, both of which would sell a mixture of food and non-food.

UK: NEW OFF-LICENCE FOR SAINSBURY'S

Article Abstract:

Sainsbury's is to close the Vins & Spiriteux outlet in the Auchan hypermarket replacing it with a new off-licence in a former discount store a few yards away. Sainsbury's new store will continue to be a joint venture with Auchan. The new 0ff-licence is to hold the entire range of Sainsbury's wine, beer, and spirit range. The group believes its new off-licence will allow it to compete against Tesco's drinks outlet, 37 cash and carries, 12 supermarkets and 3 hypermarkets for the custom of the day-trippers.
