UK: PLANS FOR MERGED CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY

Article Abstract:

If the proposed merger between the Co-operative Retail Society and the Co-operative Wholesale Society transpires, the new society plans growth through strategic acquisition. All stores in the group would share a common fascia and a major refurbishment programme would be launched. Members of the CRS are due to vote on the merger on 4 March 2000. If the proposal is supported by two thirds of voters a further meeting on 25 March 2000 will require a simple majority vote to be successful.

UK: CRS MANAGERS AGREE WITH MERGER

Article Abstract:

According to the SuperMarketing journal's research, 81% of storage managers agree with the merger of CRS and CWS. Benefits of the merger will be: combined capitalisation of GB[pound] 4.3bn, better standards and clearer identity. Drawbacks could be a reduction in the number of CRS stores leading to the loss of about 500 jobs. An official election will be held on 4 March 2000 and two thirds must poll in favour, for the merger to happen.

UK: ONE BUYER SOUGHT FOR KWIK SAVE STORES

Article Abstract:

Analysts see little prospect of the 342 Kwik Save stores, part of the Somerfield chain, being sold to one buyer. It is thought that chief executive of the Somerfield group, David Simons, is making Christmas the deadline for finding a single purchaser for the Kwik Saves, most of which are situated in Scotland and the north of England.
