UK: SAFEWAY'S AND BP'S JOINT PROJECT

Article Abstract:

Building on an existing alliance between the two companies, BP's petrol station forecourts in the UK are to be used by Safeway's home-shoppers to collect their orders, made through the Collect and Go scheme. A similar service has been already tried in Basingstoke. The forecourt trial is likely to be organised in the year 2001. In addition, the present number of 40 BP forecourts where Safeway has convenience stores, is to be increased to 100 by the year 2002.

UK: RETAILERS CRITICISE WATCHDOG FINDINGS

Article Abstract:

Price comparisons by BBC Weekend Watchdog, based on Taylor Nelson Sofres research, have been criticised by major supermarket retailers. The programme claimed that there was 'massive confusion' among shoppers over which supermarket offered the best value, alleging that meat and vegetables were 5-10% cheaper at local greengrocers and butchers, despite cost-cutting campaigns. Safeway's overall price increase of 2.5% was the greatest, while Sainsbury's prices rose by 2.1%. Tesco's prices fell by 2.3% in total, but Asda, whose prices were down 0.4%, was the cheapest supermarket. Safeway claimed that it was now cheaper than Sainsbury's, and the programme had failed to use the most recent research. A spokeswoman for Asda, meanwhile, claimed that there was a difference of only pennies between supermarkets and local stores, and that Asda's results would have been even lower if own brand products were used.
