US budget emphasizes bioterrorism counter measures

Article Abstract:

The budget proposal from the US President George W. Bush's administration for the fiscal year 2005 has little provision for specifics in biotechnology but will continue to support programs in bioterrorism countermeasures. The administration also plans to support biotechnology-related activities largely and several bioterrorism countermeasures will continue within several departments even though they are merged with the Department of Homeland Services (DHS).

Stem cells-a hard sell to investors

A lack of proven commercial success and a surfeit of ethical, legal and political problems make it difficult for stem cell companies to raise adequate funding from private equity sources such as venture capitalists. The stem cell company group comprises a relatively small number of enterprises that are more early stage than the wider biotech sector and hence the stocks appear to be much more volatile than those for the biotech sectors.
