U.S. working on new nuclear bomb, faster nukes testing ability

Article Abstract:

The Department of Energy plans to fund a new Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator (RNEP) feasibility, design definition and cost study that will help in building capability to destroy hardened, deeply buried enemy facilities and is examining whether two nuclear warheads, the B61 or the B83 might be used in the RNEP to save money and reduce the risk of design flaws. The Department of Energy also plans to spend $706.4 million in fiscal year 2005 on material protection programs and safeguarding U.S. nuclear facilities while $798 million is proposed to be spent on Navy nuclear power plants that will include up to 70 percent of the development costs of a next-generation aircraft carrier reactor.

Funding hike questioned for earth-penetrating nuke

Article Abstract:

A new congressional research service report raises doubts about the Energy Department's proposed spending of 484.7 million dollars on the study of controversial earth-penetrating nuclear warhead. The National Security Administration (NNSA) says that the proposed increase was due to a better definition of the requirement of the study, refinement of cost estimates and an increase in surety.
