Under pressure

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom stockbrokers face competition from the US, UK banks, and competition could also come from mainland Europe. Clients may not longer need to use brokers to buy stocks as new technology develops. Software is becoming increasingly expensive. The brokers' trade association, Apcims, has made a number of recommendations to brokers seeking to meet these and other challenges. The recommendations include investigating JVs, establishing links with law firms and accounting firms, and having transparent charging stuctures.

Turning up the volume

Article Abstract:

Execution-only stockbrokers in the United Kingdom can encounter problems when demand for stock peaks. They would have large amounts of unused capacity, high overheads and underemployed staff if they could always meet demand. Brokers are seeking to develop straight through processing which allows clients to input deals in their homes, with no manual intervention needed for execution. Not all clients will want to use this system, and some could face higher charges for a lesser service if they seek manual input.

Time to get out the worry beads?

Article Abstract:

A survey of investors by Investors Chronicle has shown security issues to center mainly round usage of nominee accounts. Stockbrokers tend not to be aware of the types of insurance used by their companies which indicates that this tends not to concern investors. There are a number of insurance types such as fidelity insurance which covers cases of fraud or theft by employees, and professional indemnity insurance which covers problems with professional standards.
