Viewpoint: Operational trends in Russian navigation satellite systems

Article Abstract:

There is evidence to suggest that russian navigation satellite systems have not been as badly affected as would have been expected by the overall lack of funding for the Russian space programme. It seems that Russia has pursued a successful policy of extracting as much value as possible from older satellite equipment while also holding back newer satellites until their use is absolutely vital to maintain the constellation. The Russian navigation satellite programme has also benefited from in-orbit storage and on-orbit maintenance.

Bridging space and society with technology transfer

Article Abstract:

Technology transfer is concerned with the application of a technology on different fields. It enables space agencies to offset a fraction of the funding used in technology development through marketing and licensing agreements with non-space companies. Implementation can be more effective if space agencies incorporate the technology development cycles of private companies and if they participate in the financing of basic technology research and development initiatives.

Watersheds in the modern world: the space viewpoint

Article Abstract:

The emergence of economic interests that supplement global and political interests is changing the context of space policies. This is a result of the commercial success of space telecommunications. Space is no longer only a strategic activity, but a cooperation between powers in order to build an environment of sharing and networking of space data. These policies can then be used to manage and conserve resources that will be beneficial to all mankind.
