UK: SUPERMARKETS COMPLY WITH METRICATION

Article Abstract:

According to information from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and British Retail Consortium, all UK supermarkets have complied with the European Union's ruling that sales should now be conducted in metric measurements. Asda converted to metric measurements by October 1999, and a number of other retailers made the change well in advance of the 1 January 2000 deadline, including Waitrose and the Co-op. By December 1999, 99% of retailers had made the conversion, with initial costs estimated at GB[pound] 500, and costs for the whole industry at GB[pound] 33mn. Foods displayed loose must now be weighed in grams and kilograms, rather than pounds, although customers may still ask for products in imperial units.
