Waddington's neater package

Article Abstract:

Waddington is a UK printing and packaging company which has seen erratic trading profits, but there has also been an underlying improvement. The company has sold non-core activities and poorly performing businesses, in addition to making useful acquisition in growing areas like packaging for pharmaceuticals. Some half the company's sales come from the US. A rise in the value of pound sterling damages the company's foreign activities and could lead to a drop in profit of 1 million pounds sterling from the 36.2 million pounds forecast for 1997 to 1998 by Wise Speke.

Low and Bonar

Article Abstract:

Low and Bonar has seen a drop in turnover due to a drop in the price of raw materials. The cost of paper raw materials looks set to stabilise while the cost of plastics may rise. European packaging has not performed as well as the US side since cold weather affected the silage wrap business. European plastics have performed well despite problems in the German market. Earnings have increased more rapidly than profits with the impact of a buyout of a minority stake in Bonar Inc.

Victrex

Article Abstract:

Victrex is a special plastics maker and is expected to feel pressure on earnings due to slow global growth, the effects of its major plastic product polyetheretherketone (PEEK) coming off patent and exposure to certain weak markets. Uses of PEEK include engine clutch parts and seat overhead controls in aeroplanes. However there is sluggish demand in transport, electronics and general industrial use which contribute more than 85% to group sales.
