Wait for the invite to the takeover party

Article Abstract:

Four UK building societies are carrying out share issues and giving free shares to their members. Building societies have had to compete against larger companies such as banks which can cut costs more easily. This has led to a drive to demutualize which has meant that there are fewer restrictions on borrowing and types of business activity. Further rationalization is likely to take place and this could push up the value of shares which members have acquired with thelosof mutual status of the building society.

Long wait for building societies to deliver

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom building societies argue that they can serve their customers better because they do not have to give dividends. Those that have shed their mutual status have given more in free stocks than any benefit from better interest rates. Benefits from better rates would be accrued over a very long period. Banks can still offer better deals than mutuals for some market segments, and investors do not know which mutuals might offer free stocks.
