The price to pay for protection from the market

Article Abstract:

Guaranteed funds have provided some protection for investors from losses in fall 1998, though they limit losses rather than preventing losses from occurring at all. Investors can use stock-and-put funds which use options to provide protection, but losses of up to 18% can occur. These funds can be used in United Kingdom personal equity plans. Cash-and-call funds provide protection for as much as 100% of capital, but tend not to perform as well when markets are rising.

Biotech builds castles in the air

Article Abstract:

International Biotechnology Trust (IBT) has seen a rise in its share price and a fall in net asset value. Cytel Corp suffered a drop in its share price due to problems with drug trials, and this hit IBT's net asset value, as did profit taking by investors in biotechnology. Biotech companies' shares tend to be volatile and are affected by news of drug developments Investors could choose a fund with less exposure to the sector but they can still involve risk.
